Downloads stall at 95% to 99%

Postby Reggie_459 » Tue Sep 22, 2015 8:56 pm

The download gets to anywhere from 95% to 99% and quits. It won't restart unless I manually restart it.

It's not specific to any website, it does it on all of them. It does it in both Vista and XP and two different computers, both 32-bit. Firefox on both. It happens with all types of downloads - video, audio, software, documents.

It doesn't seem to matter how I initiate the download - context menu, "Download It" button, copy URL and add, or drag.

It's been going on for awhile but I'm just getting some free time and thought I'd report it. I'm just wondering if this is a known issue and if there might be a setting that's causing it. Thanks.

It seems to be a problem with your internet connection - you should do tests using another internet provider, another router or maybe another internet security suite (antivirus, firewall, proxy etc.).

We have wireless and sometimes it does cut out, but I can tell if it's the connection by trying to load a web page. Connection problems manifest at all different times though, the problem I'm having is isolated to 95% - 99%. FDM stalls but I can still load web pages.

It seems to be some kind of transparent proxy provided by your ISP to limit payload. It works like Opera Turbo - all text files (html, css, js etc.) are gzipped, all images are downsized and/or losely compressed with maximum compression on, etc. If the proxy gzips also other files, they may be 95-99% of original size. The proxy should send proper metadata (MIME type, file size etc.) in http headers, but some misconfigured software may send data taken from original files before compression rather than from the gzipped ones, some other sofware may NOT send file size at all.
You can do a simple test - stop the download when it's stuck, then rename the downloaded file.ext to file.ext.gz and try to unpack it.

It had something to d with the maximum number of sections. I had set to 10 and reduced it to 3 and now it doesn't do it. Not sure why but it's working properly now.

I suspect you have tried to download file before it was fully uploaded - it seems to be a very rare case to happen. Or maybe there was some other problems with that website, as download speed was near to zero when I was trying to download this file.

So it seems to be some stupid protection - if you are allowed to make very many connections, you can block the website causing Denial-of-Service. Other file/video hosting sites just allow only one connection per download and reject other connections with proper error message.
Note that you don't need to use network management in such cases - as it is a global limitation for all downloads. You should better use Site Manager in FDM and limit number of connections per site.

1. You have been warned by the site admins:
www.printerdriverforwindows.com wrote:Don’t use download manager software to download files from this website due to protection of our files we don’t support download managers temporary disable download manager to download
But I could successfully download files from that site using a single FDM connection, so…

2. You should read older messages in this topic (they are merged older topics here) as there may be something wrong with your system or connection - misconfigured proxy, firewall or antivirus etc.
