I think that the torrent problem might be related to my trouble. I have a wireless connection to my cable internet modem and the wireless router has all ports stealthed by default. In order for the torrent to work, it needs an open port to communicate and share the bandwidth, so I would have to open a port manually. I could do that, but I don't know what port FDM uses and I am sure not going to open all ports! It would be nice if there were a dialog that let me set the port to use (and probably the computer's IP address) so that I can avoid a routine probe of known ports being used by FDM when I browse to other sites.
Router Setup
To set up your router:
open FDM's main window (rt-click the icon in the tray & select "show main window" or launch fdm.exe from explorer)
click on "Options" on the menu bar
Select "Download Options"
Select the "Bit Torrent" tab
Note the port range that is to be used
Check the "Limit the number of upload connections" box and set it to 5 (max) - this avoids some shutdowns due to heavy traffic over your router
Check the "Associate Free Download Manager with .torrent files" box
Click "Apply"
Close FDM's main window
Next, click "Start">Run and type "cmd" (w/o the quotes) and press Enter
at the DOS prompt, type "ipconfig" (w/o the quotes) and press Enter
note the local IP address (usually 192.168.0.x or 192.168.1.x where x varies for different setups)
note the Default Gateway (Usually 192.168.0.254 or something like that)
type "Exit and press Enter
Open your Internet browser and enter the Default Gateway address that you noted above in the address bar.
This should open your router configuration window.
The details here will vary somewhat for different routers:
Select the tab or branch labelled "Firewall"
Look for "Port Forwarding" or "Port Triggering" (Port Triggering is preferable due to security considerations)
Check "Enable port forwarding/triggering" or similar, depending on your router
Enter the port range noted in the "Bit Torrent" tab of FDM's "Options"
Select both the IP and UDP protocols
Apply the change
NOTE: If you are restricted to using "Port Forwarding" these ports are left open and constitute a security hazard when you browse other web sites. You should
return to the router setup page and turn "Port Forwarding" OFF after finishing your Bit Torrent session. Port Triggering is more secure, since the ports are only
open when the application triggers the opening of the other ports by sending data over a triggering port (here, I am guessing that it is the first port in the
range).
You may also have to open the range of ports opened above in your software firewall as well.
