Your favorite FDM3 features in newest FDM6 versions

Postby Alex » Fri Aug 09, 2019 6:04 pm

Dear FDM3 Users!

We want you all to migrate to the newest FDM version. We have not neither willing nor resources to support this version of our product due to variety set of reasons.

We want you to tell us the reasons which prevents you from this migration, so we can help you as much as we can.

Please tell us about the features you miss in our newest FDM version comparing to FDM3.

Note for Windows XP users: currently we're not considering to port FDM6 to Windows XP. This is quite hard (even if not possible at all) due to many reasons.
Alex,
FDM development team

I miss batch downloads, site explorer...

Enable seeding in bittorrent downloads could be a useful feature :-D

i had a use case of community project that i was trying to keep mirrored, as it was getting revisions to make small improvements here and there to the presentation of content, but not really changing the content (reading written content)...

the only way to keep up was to use the site explorer tool with the "retrieve size and last modified" option (though unfortunately the date sorting didn't work automatically, so had to manually peek through)...

but also it can be a handy way to have a few sites stored in there and grab some sets of files, maybe there are other more efficient ways to do it, like for audio and video or other download sites, there are RSS feeds and tools to can actually read RSS to grab the correct files on a regular basis, which unfortunately the "site explorer" cannot.

Alot is missing from v3 like user custom settings is the biggest missing factor and download date server match as well. Nothing from v3 was implemented into the newer version. v3 with all it's customize feature is what got me to use the software and allow for big unattended downloads to take place. And missing all this and instead FDM decided what feature and controls I wanted to use or not use. This is what is the problem it's lost the reason what made v3 so popular that users like me still use it. Maybe the development teams needs to go back and line by line feature v3 vs v5 and see what they failed to take into account and see why v5 or later didn't learn anything.

Absolutely essential things like:
- Generate description file
- Default folder Macros (%year%, %month% and others)
- Group properties

Have to agree with all of the above.

Basically, if I could do something in v3, I should be able to do the same in v6. That's my theory.

Hi Alex
What about feedback?
Any chance that something of the above is implemented?

Hello,
The first thing we must do is to release the stable version of FDM6.
Then (I hope) we'll start implementing top-rated features (most of them are FDM3 features which are missing in FDM5).

Hello

I tested 6.6 yesterday as i configured a new PC but had to revert to 3.9.7.
6.6 version seemed to be "empty" for me, i even didn't find a way to set default download folder (i guess the problem is my eyes, as this is the very first mandatory setting).
This is a beta so maybe it is normal.

What prevent me to update : No download windows, allowing to manage and monitor currents downloads in one click.

Sadly, without this feature i will never use newer versions.

I can see this is not a massively voted feature so I am not very confident... :(

FDM 5 has the problem that can take a single download at the same time (the popup).. so any other attempts to download files is ignored by the program unless the popup is closed (by either accepting or cancelling the download), and then the file has to be sent again to FDM..

Then FDM 6 looks promising, but has still a few issues:
1) Annoying banner "LOW"/"MEDIUM" front and center on the download list (and no way to disable)..
2) No way to disable torrent seeding after a download is done (as there is with FDM 5).
3) The new font style that now it's bolder (altought I understand it might be a feature with QT?)
4) The popup download queue (one after the other) is a step forward, but still less convenient than FDM Lite.
