SSL self-signed certificate causes vague failure

Postby acostein » Thu Dec 09, 2004 3:16 am

FDM reports an "unknown network error" if you attempt to download from a secure site that has a SSL certificate that has not been signed by one of the recognized certificate authorities.

Certificates signed by a major CA cost big money and must be renewed every so often, so small websites like mine just self-sign certificates so we can also enjoy the benefits of a secure connection without breaking the bank.

I just used FDM for the first time today, and came to the forums to see if others were having the same SSL problem I was. Credit to Rosen for figuring out that the unsigned certificate was the cause.

Here are two sample URLs I found in other posts here -- in FDM 1.5 b.253 both should fail with that vague error message:
https://www.pernikinfo.com/images/print.gif
https://ascp.monmouth.army.mil/scp/down ... er_231.exe

Any chance of getting FDM to support self-signed certificates?

Easiest would be just to let the transfer proceed without warning. It's not a big deal if the user isn't warned. It's important to know about when you're submitting credit card info, but not so much when you're downloading a file.

Thanks for an excellent product! FDM blows away all other download managers in quality and usability.
