I'm not fixated on using Firefox 57, but I'm fine with Firefox 57 and I don't want to go through the trouble of installing Firefox ESR, setting up everything, and possibly losing my browsing history. If I was having major problems with Firefox 57 or FDM 3.9.7, then I would be more willing to install Firefox ESR, but everything is fine except the FDM extension is not catching links in my limited accounts. Chrome would be my second browser choice, but its FDM extension seems to exhibit the same behavior as in Firefox.

Actually, this is quite easy to do. All you need to do is install Firefox ESR, and then run it from the commandline with the '-profilemanager' argument after the full path (you can even edit desktop shortcut it creates to do this every time) and then from the profile manager simply load the profile you want to use.

I do a lot of webpage testing on my machine, so I have multiple profiles for Firefox, Chrome, and Opera (and multiple versions of each) installed on my machine. As my daily driver, though, I use Firefox Nightly as mentioned previously.

Also, as a Windows 10 x64 Pro Insider Preview build tester, I typically cleanly install Windows at least twice a year, so backing up and restoring my browser profiles is easy for me, without the use of any third party utilities. It's really easy to do, and using the '-profilemanager' argument trick, I'm able to easily load any version of Firefox with any profile.

Of course, trying to run multiple versions of Firefox *simultaneously* is a lot trickier, but having multiple versions installed and only running one particular version at a time is not hard to do at all.

Of course, even if you do get the ability to run multiple versions simultaneously, using the same profile at the same time will cause all sorts of issues you don't want to begin trying to troubleshoot (been there - trust me it's ugly). But as long as you close out one version (and give it enough time to finish performing its background tasks) before opening the same profile in another version, you'll be fine.

However, as you suspect, and your testing has shown, it looks like this is a direct issue of the limited user, and not through any third party application running interference, as everything works perfectly well in the admin account...

johnlgalt wrote:FWIW: I'm running Windows 10 x64 Pro (with Insider Preview builds installed on top, currently at IP build 17063) and Firefox Nightly builds (currently 59.0a1 (2018-01-01) (64-bit)) with a brand new profile that I set up when Firefox Nightly first rolled out the 57.0 a1 builds (well before Fx 57 was released publicly, and thus with none of my legacy addons in Firefox that stopped working in 57+) and I am not having the issues that you describe with the context menu missing the Download with FDM, AFAICT - but I will do some more testing. Also, I do not have a limited user account to test that, either, but if you're willing to allow me some time, I can try it on my end (again with a clean profile for that limited user as well).

Please reply, and I understand your frustrations, but keeping a cool head will make things go a lot easier.

I'm running Windows 10 Pro 64-bit Version 1703 Build 15063.786. Based on my tests, it seems to me that the FDM extension might have issues with Windows limited accounts. However, nobody else seems to have issues with the FDM extension in limited accounts.

I'm not frustrated at all; it's just a quirk--probably with my computer--that's a little annoying. I can almost always work around it by copying the download URL as a new download in FDM.

I'll probably assemble my next computer later this year when the Cannonlake CPUs come out (hopefully) and I'll re-install everything from scratch.[/quote]

Indeed, I'm beginning to suspect that you're spot on about it being directly related to limited user accounts, and the reason I suspect no one else has mentioned it is that no one else has run into it - partially because very few people use limited user accounts, and also partially because the methodology in which FDM *is* used in a limited user account is more than likely those machines that are managed by a central server store of some sort.

I'm working on setting up a VM which will have only a limited user account (with UAC providing me with admin privileges, but no applications installed under the actual admin account) before I install Firefox on it and see if that makes the situation any different, but I suspect it will not.

Oh, that brings me to another thought - when you installed Firefox (assuming under your admin account) did you use the express setup or the custom setup?

You're right; most typical users probably do everything in a Windows admin account, but I prefer to err on the side of caution. It will be interesting to see what happens during your testing.

As far as my Firefox installation, my notes say I installed Firefox 28 in my admin account in April 2014, but don't indicate if I had a choice of setups. I never use express setups because I want to look for any "Phone Home" features to uncheck and other things I want to opt-out of. I always look through every setting--even though I might not change the default settings... Since then, Firefox either updated automatically or had a little button to click on to upgrade, so I never get a chance to customize setups.

^^^^ My exact reason for running custom installations of everything I install whenever possible.

VM setup is going OK, but I have to figure out the test strategy for this, as obviously there is no real way to only have a limited user account, especially in Windows 10....

It does NOT work that way. You MUST paste link in your BROWSER to get unique session ID that Google uses to generate temporary download link, then FDM may catch that link and pass it with proper referrer, session cookies etc.
That link may on may NOT contain your Google account credentials, depending on download settings (private or public). Google services insist on logging-in by default (or when you block cookies), so when you paste link directly in FDM, it is obviously redirected to login webpage.

Does it mean that you've pasted link in ANOTHER BROWSER? What for?

Note Better: Your FDM version/build and your FDM extension version are ALWAYS required. Follow the reporting rules (linked in my signature), please.

No, i pasted the link of the download page. I want test it on chrome. I go to my download page, click on "download" button, and fdm could catch the file.

If the download is public, just provide the download link instead of playing with pictures. Let any willing users check your observations on their own. Once again - FOLLOW the reporting rules and RTF FAQ.
Now in short:
1. WebExtension is a standard developed by Google, so it should work perfectly in Google Chrome. Firefox developers haven't implemented full WebExtension API yet, so if the link in Firefox doesn't contain filename, you should right click the link to open context menu and select "Download with FDM". See FDM FAQ.
2. Short links provided by file/video hosting services (including MS OneDrive, Google Drive and Youtube) may be permanent, but in most cases they are redirected (resolved) to temporary links that contain current session and file parameters in request, as I have mentioned earlier. FDM uses its own "link resolver" only for youtube and flash downloads, in other cases FDM must catch temp link generated in the browser. It may fail, if the link is obfuscated, encrypted, hidden in iframe embedded in iframe, etc., though some specialized downloaders may dig deeper with no success guaranteed.

Please do something about this: The extension keeps failing, it just failed twice in less than an hour!

I was browsing/downloading as usual, until I noticed that nothing happened when I cliked on a link to download a file. Went to addons, disabled and re-enabled the extension and it started working again, but about 1/2 an hour later, it happened again!
This is not the first time this has happened, it has happened several times before, please fix it!!!

I'm on firefox 58 x64, win7 x64. webext v 3.0.6

Problems downloading from YouTube.

Postby PickleRick73 » Wed Jan 24, 2018 9:04 am

I cannot download anything from Youtube.

When I enter the URL, the drop-down options for the Video or Audio format selection appears, but when I click the "Download" button.... absolutely nothing happens. No download is initiated. Downloads working fine on various files from other sites. I went through the settings carefully to see if it was a configuration error. I have tried re-installing, re-booting, and updating the extension, etc. I am at a loss.

Windows 7 64-bit
Firefox ESR 52.6.0 (64-bit)
FDM version 5.1.34.6893 (e961425) 64-bit
FF FDM Extension version 3.0.6

Any help would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks in advance.

In the dropdown with the list, how many of them say 0 B at the end (meaning 0 bytes aka no file)?

Did you specifically try anything that is not 0 B?

FDM and Firefox problems I have encounter

Above website from Yandex.Disk, while downloading using FDM, name is correct as "mpc-be", but from browser (firefox58.0.1 64bit) is raw file names (very long names) rather than "mpc-be". Disable of the extension 3.0.6, browser downloading correctly as "mpc-be". I'm sorry if I'm not explaining in good English.
Sorry for repeating this as I wrongly reported on the other thread "FDM 5.1", and no way to delete that.
Thanks and have a good everyday.

Dear User!

Do you install using one user account, but run FDM from another account? Could you kindly make and send us a video with a link to the site where you test it?

Hi Clive!

Sorry for not responding sooner! I just got back from vacation.

I normally install programs in my Admin account and then run those programs in my Limited Account. But I've tried installing FDM 3.97 (with Run As Admin option) in my Limited Account and the FDM extension still didn't function as expected in my Limited Account.

The URL that I am testing is the FDM website (https://www.freedownloadmanager.org/), more specifically the "Free Download for Windows" button that links to https://dn3.freedownloadmanager.org/5/5 ... _setup.exe. I'm not using FDM 5.1, but I figure this URL is a good link for testing.

Thanks!

I am seeing this too on 58.0.2 64 bit, extension 3.0.6.

e.g. If I download Etcher (SD card writer) from https://etcher.io/ the filename comes down as this in the browser:
ca74d5a4-001b-11e8-9486-b8614b6fbdca

The file is intact and correct apart from the name (appending .exe allows the software to run and install).

Anyone else replicate this?
