Separate download of FDM plugin for Firefox

Postby murmel » Tue Mar 06, 2012 12:49 pm

Hi,
my FF installed an update for the FDM-Plugin a few days ago (now 1.5.6). Since that, FDM (3.9, 1194) isn`t starting anymore when starting a download. Only the FF download popup is coming.
I tried to reinstall, but it didn`t help.
Any ideas?
Regards.

Edit:
I deinstalled FDM, deinstalled the FF plugin 1.5.6 and installed FDM again. Now the FF plugin is 1.5.5 again and FDM is working as it should again.

There is NO separate FDM plugin installer that can be downloaded by Firefox.
I'm afraid you have downloaded and installed some malware and your system is still infected.

Re: FDM 3.9 Release Candidate 1

Hmmm, that`s curious.
It was installed by the FF Addon-Autoupdate-Function.
I have G Data Antivirus running all the time and it was very successfull in blocking malware/virussoftware so far.
Will scan my whole PC with it now and the same with Spybot S&D after and give a feedback.

Edit:
Tested with G Data, Spybot and Windows Defender and none of it found anything.

Same thing happened to me, however I declined the update because in all the years using FDM, I've never had an update from Add-on manager/Firefox/Mozilla for FDM's plugin. I was going to research first and see what the dev here was up to, now I know it was a possible 'rouge developed' add-on that was being pushed out via Firefox's add-ons site by a dev named vaneo. This "1.56 update" has since been removed: (This add-on has been removed by its author.) - See Google Cache: Free Download Manager plugin :: Add-ons for Firefox - http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/s ... ger-plugi/

Background:
And the original (FAKE version/update) page here: Free Download Manager plugin :: Add-ons for Firefox - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... ger-plugi/

Looks like a possible disaster was avoided for users who updated. Mozilla has/will remote kill that fake 1.56 plugin/add-on.

I hope that gives some insight.

Thank you original dev for your hard work and dedication over the years.

Wishing you the best, P.

It hasn't been fake, I suppose. This plugin has been submitted by vaneo - it looks like a new FDM developer's nickname. I suspect the developer has tried to do some tests with plugin, but...
1. Users should be warned before such tests.
2. I have already explained why FDM plugin should be distributed only with FDM installer, see "Can't find firefox plugin 1.5.5" topic.

BTW. Plugin version number in install.rdf should be bumped (f.e from 1.5.5 to 1.5.5.1) even if the only change is maxVersion of Firefox in install.rdf.

Thank you for the "explantation" of this 1.5.6 plugin story.
But shouldn`t you, Usher, know, if there is a new developer who is testing something with this update?
I would sleep better if I know, it was an "official" test or something and no try to share malware.
Please excuse me for my english.

Hi,
It was decided to implement auto-update function in FDM firefox addon because Firefox updates too regularly.
This will helps to support new Firefox version as quickly as possible.

I apologize for the inconvenience, caused by FireFox Addon-Autoupdate-Function.
Addon's test version 1.5.6 was specially refactored for conditions of mozilla addons gallery.
But, unfortunately it was available for downloading as soon as premoderation was completed.
I discovered a problem only at morning, after 5-6hours. I turned it off, but it was too late.
Addon was fixed immediately and currently is going under full-testing.
You can download the fixed version 1.5.7 and install it manually: http://files2.freedownloadmanager.org/f ... indows.xpi
Addon will be uploaded in Firefox gallery later.
Thank you for your understanding.

ok, I've downloaded it, what now? when I double click it, it opens a new email.
I put it in the FDM root folder, and it seems to be the only XPI file there. Firefox 10.0.2 still doesn't recognise it.
