FDM 5.x Feature Request
FDM 5.x Feature Request
Hi, all. I'm posting this as a thread here as opposed to the 5.x Beta thread as a single post there would easily get lost, but a thread here would be easy to find as I think up more features to request. If this is in error, please let me know.
So, I was a very long time user of the FDM 3.x series, and a small contributor here in the forums here and there. I went to another DM for a good while, starting with beta releases from them, and only now have come back to FDM and this particular beta after a long hiatus.
I like the design. Being an Android mobile guy, with its move toward what they call Material Design, I'm a lot more enthusiastic of using this DM over the older 3.x. And, it has a lot going for it, the most important being easy integration into Firefox Nightly 48.0.1α. The integrated Torrent DM is a great thing too.
However, I have some RFFs.
These are the major features I want to see - basically, I don't mind the new UI, but please bring the features from the old 3.x versions into this, even if it means installing them as extensions to the default software. If I can think of anymore I'll add them here.
Addendum: First option, filename editing, has been removed because it can already be performed in FDM 5. because of this, the poll has been reset, and I'm allowing up to 3 options now per vote.

- I cannot edit the file name when downloading. I saw someone a couple of pages ago mention this as well, and it irks me, too. Sometimes programs, particularly installations, are linked to a setup.exe file, with no other indication of what the program is. If I don't note it right then and there what the program actually is, then later on in my dowload folder I might have 2, 3 or more seup.exe files (obviously renamed with naming scheme of adding numbers in parentheses) that I have to run in order to figure out what they are. Please allow filename editing.
- The FDM manager window will pop up automatically when a DL is added - but then stays there. Old version allowed us to hide the notification window after making a selection as to whether I should download or not.
- Re-add checking for existing downloads, with the full scheme of allowing the user to decide on the fly whether to rename or replace.
- Integrate hash check during download.
- Add the comment feature back in (goes along with editing the filename, really, but I'd actually prefer the comments over directly editing the filename itself, if it comes own to picking between either option).
- Add the check for file mirrors.
- Allow us to specify settings per site as well as per download with regards to how many segments to use, DL speed, etc.
- Add the floating monitor that is active in a variety of manners - never, when downloading, or always.
These are the major features I want to see - basically, I don't mind the new UI, but please bring the features from the old 3.x versions into this, even if it means installing them as extensions to the default software. If I can think of anymore I'll add them here.

Re: FDM 5.x Feature Request
Is it possible to make FDM's downloading speed "dynamic"?
What I meant by dynamic, is that, FDM will download at the highest possible download speed/bandwidth it gets from the connection(s) unless some other processes (like, browsers) are requesting bandwidth at the same time. When other processes requests bandwidths, FDM will dynamically reduce its bandwidth limit and let others use the bandwidth as they needed, and after that when the bandwidth is freed from other processes, FDM will use the freed bandwidth again as it needs.
I know there are processes like limiting traffics, snail mode. But as I see FDM doesn't respect those limits. Though it shows the using speed/bandwidth as set, but behind the scene it uses the whole available bandwidth.
How?
Just after un-limiting the traffic limit, FDM will show the average of its speed, which will be more than available bandwidth, which is the average of its previous (hidden uses) and current uses.
And also, while limiting the traffic, looking at 'Resource Monitor (Windows) > Network' it's clearly seen that FDM still uses the full bandwidth while being limited.
Thanks

Dynamic speed limits added. As poll options have changed, poll has been reset.

I still support the 3 vote method. And it will also prevents the users who will vote all options, thus those votes will become neutral.
But in addition to all those, I guess, it would be better if there were a custom written list to hold all the options and their last amount of votes.
What's the benefit?
The custom written list will make it easier to keep track of votes even after new items are being added, thus previous votes will be preserved. And after addition of any of the features into FDM, it can easily be removed from the list, and can also be kept in another custom list (if needed). And as a bonus we will always have a history of our list.
So, how to do?
Starting List >
Features Users Wish FDM Would Have
Feature - Last Updated Votes(compare polling and this list, greater is counted)[*this text is for new coming users to read]
- 1. A feature to be implemented - 3
- 2. Another feature - 1
Above is an example how a custom list can be kept. This list could/would be updated before a new feature is added, thus previous votes will be tracked.
After new feature >
Features Users Wish FDM Would Have
Feature - Last Updated Votes(compare polling and this list, greater is counted)[*this text is for new coming users to read]
- 1. A feature to be implemented - 45
- 2. Another feature - 33
- 3. Yet another feature - 0
When a feature is added into FDM, the list can easily be removed from the poll and also from the custom list, and if needed another custom list can keep the history.
After feature addition into FDM >
Features Users Wish FDM Would Have
Feature - Last Updated Votes(compare polling and this list, greater is counted)[*this text is for new coming users to read]
- 1. Another feature - 33
- 2. Yet another feature - 0
Features Implemented
Feature - Last Updated Votes
- 1. A feature to be implemented - 45
This seems lot to do, does it need to be updated regularly?
Initially it's a bit, but after that it's a lot less to do, and much more helpful, I guess. As the custom list would be updated only after a new item is added or removed, and in addition we'll always have the previous votes. No vote loss, as it happened just after adding dynamic speed limit addition.
So, where to put?
This list can be put into your first post, as it would be easier to see.
Thanks for reading, it's bit long
Re: FDM 5.x Feature Request
Good idea. I did not consider noting the votes before making the changes, so I was not able to do anything like that before. I'll try to keep a note of it going forward.

Re: FDM 5.x Feature Request
Also, do note that I am not affiliated with FDM in any manner. I am an independent user who started this poll because I loved FDM 3.x and used it for a very long time, but it simply stopped suiting my needs when WinX came around in beta form. At the time, FDM 5 was also very much an alpha product. Now, having returned to try it again, I see marked improvement in the product, and I want to offer suggestions to make it as functional and utilitarian as the 3.x version without sacrificing their vision of the current generation's path.

As FDM is released under GPL and FDM team's approach of supporting/developing features for 5.x series based on user's request, I believe this post of your can potentially become the ultimate go-to for users and developers, and become the linkage between the both, and community is the key factor for opensource software. If this post get pinned by FDM team to organize requests, or if they build something to manage feature requests, that would be great for both users and developers, I believe.
My journey also started at 3.x, and still 3.x is the best of FDM, though 5.x also have some amazing features, it still has a lot of room to grow.
Thanks
