Dear all!

The issues with the FDM Firefox plugin 1.5.8 have been recently rectified by our programmers. From now on, Firefox 22 - 24 is supported. You do not need to update FDM client. Please use the current version of FDM 3.9.2 1303.

@ vaneo: Thanks very much for the excellent news in your post above and also for the link to the updated FDM Plugin 1.5.7.5 on Firefox's Addons website.

I note that my FDM 3.9 "lite" (latest stable version: build 1249) on XP/SP3 machine did not update automatically from the old version 1.5.7.4 Plugin. When I ran "Check for Updates" from inside Firefox 15.0 Add-ons Manager/Extensions "No update available" was still reported. I then downloaded the new Plugin 1.5.7.5 from your link and this installed normally. ("install.rdf maxVersion" now reads 15.*)

I also have the latest FDM 3.9.1 BETA (build 1268) on a Windows 7 machine - this updated completely automatically - but to a new 1.5.7.6 Plugin version? ("install.rdf maxVersion" now reads 20.*.*)

In discussion with other FDM users I/we also note that the new Plugin version 1.5.7.5 seems to be able to detect the FDM version installed and then alter the "maxVersion" compatibility number in the "install.rdf" file to suit? (EXAMPLE: FDM 3.9.1 BETA (build 1264 - one down from latest BETA) did not update automatically but when new Plugin 1.5.7.5 was downloaded the "maxVersion" altered to read: 18a1..... but opening up the same new Plugin 1.5.7.5 prior to installation into Firefox shows only "maxVersion" 15.*)

I, and no doubt many other other more technically interested FDM users, would much appreciate it if you could explain how the new FDM Plugins actually achieve this. Thanks in advance. Blacklab.

Is this plugin gonna work with Firefox 15? I am currently on Firefox 14.01 and plugin version 1.5.7.4 works.

@daminen: I believe YES is the answer to both your questions - IMHO as ordinary FDM user trying to make sense of the rather limited information as best I can!

Yes - Softpedia's copy should be the same as FDM Plugin 1.5.7.5 that can be downloaded from vaneo's link to the Firefox Add-ons site at top of this thread - which is where my copy came from last week!

Yes - If it is FDM Plugin 1.5.7.5 it will allow current FDM stable release versions 3.9 or 3.9 lite (both are "build 1249") - to work with all Firefox 15 versions - latest stable release of Firefox is currently version 15.0.1 and my FDM 3.9 + new Plugin version 1.5.7.5 works.
(NOTE: FDM 3.9 + old Plugin version 1.5.7.4 does NOT seem to update automatically so you will need to UPDATE MANUALLY.) See my 1st question to vaneo above - 10 days ago....

However if you are running one of the more recent FDM 3.9.1 BETA versions (latest BETA download available from link on FDM 3.9.1 BETA forum topic - link near top of 1st post by Alex.) your plugin probably AUTOMATICALLY UPDATES to FDM Plugin version 1.5.7.6 when you update to Firefox 15 if not before - I just booted (different computer from the one running FDM 3.9) after updating it to Firefox 15 and the new Plugin 1.5.7.6 had appeared in Firefox Add-ons Manager/Extensions when I looked a few hours later!
(NOTE: If you are running latest FDM 3.9.1 BETA "build 1268" (released 03 Sep 2012) the new version 1.5.7.6 plugin's "install.rdf" file has the "maxVersion" number set to Firefox version 20.*.*) See my 2nd question to vaneo above - also 10 days ago....

It catches everything pretty well, though I've not tried the super-anal filehosting sites yet with captchas and redirecting links etc

@ Carl Sagan's Ghost: The major drawback of using either of the Integrator type Add-ons; FlashGot (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... /flashgot/) or xThunder (https://addons.mozilla.org/enUS/firefox/addon/xthunder) is that they cannot achieve the full integration with the Firefox browser that FDM is designed to offer. In particular FDM's built-in monitoring, which should automatically "pick up" downloads selected in the browser, does not work - requiring you to select FDM through an expanded right click menu options list.
Personally I like the "one click" full browser integration achieved by using FDM with it's own Firefox Plugin.

I also think it's better to avoid unnecessary extra Firefox Extensions where possible - FlashGot was fingered as No 4. on the "Mozilla Wall of Shame" last year. Mozilla removed their original article but you can still find copies to read with a simple search.

PS. As a keen user of the Pale Moon browser (An optimised version of latest Firefox/Mozilla code for current Windows OS on modern CPU's) it requires some extra effort to fully integrate FDM so as not to have to use one of the integrator Add-ons! (See Pale Moon Forum topic "Integrating Free Download Manager" if interested: http://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=1070)
So my opinion above is probably rather biased - for Firefox users the FDM plugin now works straight out of the box and hopefully will update automatically from now on! What's not to like?
PPS. @ vaneo & FDM Dev Team - Pale Moon users would really appreciate "out of the box" FDM integration too! Please!

You have described only the final state. All details of the initial state and your actions step-by-step would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry Usher I'm not sure what need to know, I've been using FDM for a number of years now and normally use firefox's built in download manager for day-to-day use (i.e small files) and then use the FDM Firefox context menu for large files.

However from time to time if there are a number of files I'm going to download from a site I'll quickly tick the box in the FDM options to turn on Firefox monitoring and then the files will be caught by FDM and bypass the inbuilt Firefox new download popup, then untick the options box when I'm finished, returning to the inbuilt Firefox new download popup.

This has worked in the past, but then today I changed the option and received the formally noted error (picture in previous post). Software versions also stated previously. If there's anything else I can provide then please ask as I cant think of any such steps. Thank you for your attention.

Can you describe step-by step changes that you have made in your system from that time?
Any Windows, antivirus (or other internet security suite), Firefox or FDM updates?
Any updated or new add-ons in Firefox? Any changed Firefox settings?

Do you know that Firefox has changed the way add-ons are started and executed?
Have you ever seen FDM warning that some changes require browser restart?
Have you read any older topic about Firefox and FDM integration?

While not a solution, something else to note, is that you can leave FF integration enabled at all times and if it is something you want FF to handle downloading, then when FDM's download window pops open, just hit the ESC key (or the Cancel button) and it will close and FF's download dialog will open.

I have to do this for when downloading Quicken web connect files from my bank site as FDM doesn't seem to download it properly.

Additionally, if you find you're doing the small downloads more often or what have you, you can still leave FF integration enabled, but check off the option that ALT must be pressed when clicking the link for FDM to download.

DO NOT USE FLASHGOT if you are trying to download accounting files! Not because it doesn't work, but because it works too good!

I've just spent the last couple of weeks trying to get rid of what I thought was a Trojan/Virus that changed my bank and other financial download into garbage files. I downloaded dozens of special virus cleaning programs, and finally reformatting my hard drive, reloading Windows, only to find the "virus" re-occurring. I finally pinned it down to my restoring FireFox.

What I discovered was FireFox was automatically upgrading to ver 16.0.2 and I hadn't upgraded the FDM plug in to it's latest, or the program FDM to it's latest.

I found that my bank "export files" did not like FDM which politely refused to try and download when usinging the default "press alt", but Flashgot forced FDM, downloading garbage instead of the proper "QIF" file. When I got rid of Flashgot, and let FDM politely refusing to downlode the file and the file was downloaded with the browser download, I received the proper "QIF" file.

These files are usually small anyway, and download fast enough without FDM.

Go to FDM menu Options | Settings | Downloads | Mirroring, press "Skip list" button, add sites you want to be ignored by FDM and don't make voodoo with using two similar add-ons any more.
I suspect you would find this option faster if it was available from FDM Site Manager.

Firefox has blocked the plugin, see here for the error message they show to end users and here for the bugzilla entry that got this filed (they blocked it earlier today). Apparently the #3 most common reason for Firefox version 17.0 to crash was Free Download Manager plugin version 1.5.7.5. Supposedly there is a plugin version 1.5.7.6 but I cannot get it. I have Free Download Manager 3.9.1 beta build 1268 and it came with plugin version 1.5.7.5, not 1.5.7.6. I don't know where you can get plugin version 1.5.7.6. Apparently neither do the people at Firefox because they do not provide a download link. And the version on Mozilla Update, here, is way out of date, version 1.5.6. Anyway Firefox tells you the plugin is blocked now, and then lets you decide whether you want to go along with the block and disable the plugin, or they do give you the option of overriding their block and keeping the plugin enabled anyway. I decided to keep it enabled anyway and override the block. Haven't had any problems yet. However, you should get the version that is fixed (I think 1.5.7.6) out on Mozilla Update, so we can get rid of this annoying message from Firefox about it being blocked. Or maybe put out a new version of the 3.9.1 beta that comes with the updated Firefox plugin.
