Just an update (3.0.871)

Have you tried to contact the poster above, C.Anssens@... ?
Yes, I have. I sent him an e-mail on last January 13 but he never answered. I had hopes that he would keep FDM alive. Pehaps he also does not have the time or the will to pursue this task.
Re: Just an update (3.0.871)
I got no reply either. As I suspected that route is a dead end. Furthermore that person might be a she, not a he, and is possibly not at all interested in getting into FDM code!

I still use it, even with its handicaps, but this grows progressively more difficult. I have not yet dared to make the change to Orbit Downloader, Fresh Download, Internet Download Manager, or other such programs, hoping that by some miracle FDM will resurrect from the dead!
I was putting up with Orbit before I alighted with FDM. The new version 3 represented about 15 steps backward so I gave up on it. I'd never heard of Fresh Download until I read your post. From the reviews I read on the web, though, I don't think I'd want to try it. The latest Flashget is going the same way as Orbit so for me the pinnacle of download manager software seems to be Flashget circa 2007. I'm persevering with FDM because it's open source and I (wrongly?) got the impression that development was ongoing ...

Indeed.
As you might have guessed I'm wondering about rolling my own. Either from scratch or developing on from this:

Great idea! I would help you if I had the expertise, but unfortunately I don't. Maybe I could help as a tester.
Since this is open software I think Alex might give you his permission to go ahead with the project and become a project member. I have seen this happen with other projects in SourceForge. Or is it easier to start from scratch?
Re: Just an update (3.0.871)
It's often easier to start from scratch. My 'wishlist' for FDM is confined almost wholly to interface improvements but nevertheless it's coded in C++ and I've never done anything large-scale with that language.
As I think I might have hinted earlier, my ideas for what a download manager should do seem to be at considerable variance to the authors of existing download manager software. My emphasis is more on the 'manager' and less on the 'download'. I want to manage the downloaded files, group them, find them, update them, know what I did, when. I'm not so interested in clever tricks to download videos, get past restrictions on Rapidshare and the like, support extra protocols or hammer servers and this (shared) AP with 30 simultaneous requests.
If I wasn't asking for much I'd hope for Flashget circa 2007 with some of the improvements from Orbit thrown in. If I'm going to be coding my own then it'll have to be cross-platform, web-enabled, even able to work in a distributed fashion (to complete a job on my n810 when I'm out and about and my main machine has no internet access).
Regarding the query as to the current state of development well, Alex has posted here twice this year (he did log in less than seven days ago too) and one of those posts ,"Yes it is", is I suppose positive at least:

Re: Just an update (3.0.871)
Thank you for the Beta Update. FDM is now starting much faster for me. It took about up to 5 Minutes with the latest lite version, but this version seems to start in less than 10 Seconds (like FlashGet).

Now I began to sort out my extensions and I found out, that when I disable the FDLM-plugin FF exits fine. So it seems to be an incompatibility with your plugin in FF 3.6.
Problem solved, since an update for an other extension all is fine...

How do I download the latest build from here?
I have not found a link on the forum site to download any thing.
Thanking you ahead in this matter,

Your e-mail shows the link to go to, which is just this thread. The first post in this thread starts by saying, 'Here is the update for 3.0 version' which is a link to http://files2.freedownloadmanager.org/fdm3uinst.exe

Re: Just an update (3.0.871)
This updated fixed the download problem with IE8 but I did notice on sites that require you to download a file by right-click save target as ... FDM will not recognize that. Any ideas? Thank you for the .871 update. Have a nice day/evening!
Re: Just an update (3.0.871)
I use FDM 3.0.871. A new version with version number 3.0.852 released.
What should I do. Uninstall 871 and install 852?

I got the same question?, what's up with these version numbers? or is this just an old version posted to get users?
Re: Just an update (3.0.871)
852 - just update for official release of 3.0 version. If you want to update - update to 3.4 ALPHA.

K thanks for the response. I use .870 right now and works OK as far as I use it.
Don't go for "alpha" versions of anything, beta maybe, but beta 2 or 3

?? if that is what this .852 IS, than what was ".870 and .871" ??
Wouldn't ANY update to 3.0 be .872 if .870 and .871 has already been out there for a while?
