Elephant add-on: based on youtube-dl fork
Hey guys.
I'm sure most of you have been as bummed as me that FDM hasn't been able to download Youtube videos for months. I mostly used FDM for that task and I liked how easy and comfortable it was compared to other downloaders. But then the functionality got basically cut off.
Being a diehard like myself, I didn't just switch to something else. I actually made an addon that lets FDM use the functions like that of the famous youtube-dl utility. It took some sweat, tears, and a number of rather strong profanities but I actually made it work.
Seeing as how I like FDM and respect its creators, I decided to share this add-on with other users. The add-on is freely available on Github. You can build it manually from sources or download prebuilt add-on from here.
I hope this helps you all like it helped me. Cheers!
P. S.
Here is the list of some supported sites: https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp/blob/m ... edsites.md.

I've updated my add-on (one issue fixed).
Re: Elephant add-on: based on youtube-dl fork
Okay, if I paste is a yt video url, it doesn't download the video, it downloads the html of the page itself? Anyone else seeing this issue

I know of two 3rd party software that can do this one is small pay to use and the other is free. Those are more updated then FDM as they are more updated and maintained just for that reason. One should try these other one paid and one free as FDM can't constantly update when YouTube has FUNDS to do their programing and can change faster then FMD can catch up.

What is the URL you are trying to download?
Are you sure add-on is installed and it's in OK state? Please show me the screenshot of your Add-ons page in FDM.

Okay, usually, if I want to get a yt video, I'll right click on video, select copy video URL and then paste that url in FDM to download. Also, I've just copied the url directly from the url bar, neither has worked.
I don't see any indication that the add-in isn't installed correctly. Here is the screenshot of the add-on as installed:

Haha, I knew it. It's macOS I think you forgot to install certificates for your Python.
You need to open Python folder (e.g. /Applications/Python 3.9) and launch Install Certificates.command in it. Don't forget to restart FDM after it's done. More details are available here: https://bugs.python.org/issue43404.
Re: Elephant add-on: based on youtube-dl fork
Ah, well, that's the first I've ever heard about installing certificates command. I have multiple apps, all of which use python, and I've never had an issue, at least so far.
Well, none the less, I followed the instructions, restarted FDM, and tried a few times, and it still gives the same result. It downloads a html file of the page and not the video stream as a file. I even uninstalled the plugin, and then reinstalled and restarted. Nope, still the same result.
So, as an example, say this was an actual yt video url:
https://youtu.be/jkasd9879a8sd
Okay, I paste that url into FDM to download, and it queries for a few seconds, and then it asks where to save the file. The file it's trying to save would be jkasd9879a8sd.html, and not the video stream file, such as jkasd9879a8sd.mp4, or some variation thereof.

My web browser says: "This video isn't available anymore".
Re: Elephant add-on: based on youtube-dl fork
Yes that was just an example, that wasn't an actual video. But, it behaves just like I laid out.
Re: Elephant add-on: based on youtube-dl fork
hey I saw that your add on supports spotify podcasts too but whenever I copy the link of any spotify podcast it just shows me the html file not the actual audio file
