FDM 5 Preview
Re: FDM 5.0 alpha
Hi, I'm a long-time user and fan of Free Download Manager, and also a design student. I like that you guys have been working on the interface to get it into the modern era, but like others have said, perhaps this is too much. One of the reasons I really like the current (aka stable) version is that the buttons are all there for me to see and use. It's not cluttered or old fashion at all - it simply works.
If I could make a suggestion design-wise, it would be that all you guys should focus on doing is updating the button and UI graphics, but please don't do a total minimalist overall. Keep the current layout.
Anyways, keep up the great work! Looking forward to the stable release of v.5!

Feedback on 2571:
The UI is a little better, but the fact that you actually added back in the ability to ask the user for various things like if the DL hashcheck did not match, or if the file already exists, has given new breath to this Alpha process. Thank you!
I've uninstalled FDM 3 and kept only the FDM 5, but when I launch Google Chrome, I get the following popup:
But when I click that Install link it wants to download and install FDM 3....

Re: FDM 5.0 alpha
Problem:
Win 8.1, Chrome Version 35.0.1916.153 m, FDM 5.0 build 2601.
Downloading a biggish file (400 MB) from Youtube.
At 93% complete download log started filling with sequence of errors:
HTTP/1.1 403 Forbidden
Section [11] Access denied. Invalid user name or password
Pause 5 sec
Connecting...
Get.................
(abbreviated, I couldn't figure out how to copy text out of the log so manually typed selected bits)
A YTD download running in parallel at the same time went on to completion without incident.
I can't figure if this is an FDM problem, a Youtube problem, or a Win8.1 problem.
???

Re: FDM 5.0 alpha
If you were running both in parallel it could very well have been YouTube's servers catching on to multiple connections from both and killed the app with the larger number of connection, that being FDM....

Re: FDM 5.0 alpha
OK. You don't need to remove the previous version.mack wrote:Is it ok to install a new build directly over the old one
Currently there are some issues with browser plugins when uninstalling FDM 3 after installing FDM 5 alpha. We're working on them. We do not recommend to remove FDM 3 after installing FDM 5 alpha.
johnlgalt, since you did it, please try to open FDM 5 > Settings > Monitoring > uncheck & check "Google Chrome" tick. If this does not help, reinstall FDM 3 or FDM 5 alpha. (FDM 3 installation won't damage to FDM 5 alpha).
Other suggestions mentioned above (main toolbar/buttons UX, more control when file exists, Youtube connections limit) will be implemented in the future releases.
Re: FDM 5.0 alpha
Thanks, D. Yessa. I had actually uninstalled FDM 3 before reading your and Victoria's post so I will now try your fix with the latest version, and if that does not work, simply reinstall FDM 3.
A couple of things with the latest build:
In Settings --> Network tab --> Miscellaneous menu item section:
And a minor point of the design (wording actually) - instead of uncompleted downloads, I think, in the English version, the correct word to use would be incomplete download
That's all for now, more as I find them.

In Settings --> Network tab --> Miscellaneous menu item section:
- If you enable the setting Additional file extension for uncompleted download:, you cannot enter the actual extension until after you click the Apply button and then come back into settings.
- Same thing for Create an extension if a file doesn't have one
- Same concept for the setting Don't restart the download is resuming is not supported by server - the drop down box to select the default response is not activate until you save settings and then come back into settings.

Touch screen support needed.
It's kinda silly when this program have a perfect modern UI and doesn't support touch input like Scrolling
I'm using MS Surface Pro 2, Windows 8.1, and FDM build 2627 btw. Hope you guys add those touch feature soon.
P/s: File manager needed too!

Re: FDM 5.0 alpha
What about quality video downloads i.e 1080p/720p, etc..., is this going to be there in this version?
Re: FDM 5.0 alpha
Please add category option.
Re: FDM 5.0 alpha
1. The font size is very large can you make it small or give options like large, small, smaller.
2. Include add link, clear and direct Options in the front UI.
thanks

Re: FDM 5.0 alpha
Thank you for the suggestions and bug reports. All above will be taken into account in the near future, except one - Windows RT version. Current FDM 5 architecture allows to easily port the UI to Mac OS X and Linux (we'll try to do it this year), but there is nothing like CEF for WinRT, so it's a lot of work.
Yes, this must work now for all HD videos.yash wrote:What about quality video downloads i.e 1080p/720p, etc..., is this going to be there in this version?

I cannot test this alpha version on my production system as it can mess the system.
How does the HD video download works? (Other than drag/drop & copy/paste)
Does it works like, download tab on the running video & when you click download it shows all the available format with quality & size? (Internet Download Manager works this way too)
Does it works like, right click video clip & select download video with FDM & it shows all the available format with quality & size? (Internet Download Accelerator works this way too)

Actually, you can, as the latest release now installs side by side with FDM 3.x, and imports your settings from FDM 3.x, so that you can test it and remove it as you need without affecting FDM 3.x.
So, yes, this is definitely testable even in a production environment.
