1. For video downloads in Firefox or Chrome you can use FDM with SaveFrom.net helper or Video DownloadHelper. You can also use FDM without direct integration with Firefox or Chrome, just turn off monitoring in FDM and use 3rd party download helper like Flashgot for Firefox. I'm afraid there is no good general download helper for Chrome now - older extensions were abandoned (like Download Assistant) or not fully ported to new API yet (lIke FDM extension).
2. There is NO guarantee that ANY downloader will work for all video downloads. Even if some downloader works today, it may stop work tomorrow. Webmasters of many video hosting sites deliberately change code or their sites to prevent downloads, they even use broken code that may work properly only in some specific versions of one only web browser, see f.e.:

Dear Usher,
Thanks for taking time to explain the issues around downloading in the browsers.
I agree with the problems in Chrome and downloading, hardly anything works. I do not like to use those browser direct link downloads as once the browser is closed the download stops.
Downloading through the FF browser using the flashgot ext linked to FDM works, it grabs all the DL's and redirects to FDM, I prefer to monitor the downloads through FDM and I will continue to use it this way.
Thanks again for the above clarifications.
Kind regards

You don't use a download manager for ripping videos. No, you just don't do it.rollingrock wrote:I guess this confirms I have to uninstall FDM and use the alternative download manager (also free) where everything is working just fine....for all downloads in FF and Chrome.
Simply use the UnPlug extension for FF.
Re: PLEASE put up all FDM and Firefox problems here!
Request: Return focus to browser after having added a download.
Environment: Windows 10; FF 40.0.3; FDM 3.9.6 (1614)
Steps to reproduce:
1) Start a download, for e.g., click: http://f0.freedownloadmanager.org/fdminst.exe. Wait for FDM dialog box to pop-up, press OK in it to start the download.
2) FDM starts the download and the FDM dialog disappears.
3) Press e.g. Ctrl+T to open a new tab in the browser. Notice that browser doesn't open another tab, instead an 'Add Task' dialog window pops up.
What is happening is that even though the FDM dialog disappeared, FDM still retained the active window focus (and hence the keyboard shortcuts went to FDM instead of going to FF) instead of returning it to the browser.
Please fix this, this is extremely annoying - there is absolutely no reason for FDM to retain focus.

What is the state of your main FDM window before and after starting a download?Hippo wrote:Request: Return focus to browser after having added a download.

Before starting download: FDM minimized to tray, hence main window not visible.
After: FDM still minimized to tray; again main window not visible.

So it's a real problem. Thanks for your report.Hippo wrote:Before starting download: FDM minimized to tray, hence main window not visible.
After: FDM still minimized to tray; again main window not visible.
Edit: I have tested other apps called from their tray icon and now I think I was wrong. In all cases focus was passed to the parent window - that is - to the taskbar, which is a parent for notification area containing tray icons.

And so far you haven't provided any more detailed report as it is requested in the reporting rules.Ismail Abouhleka wrote:Please solve this problem I was having them since the last issue on 08.08.2015 and so far I have not found a solution
Now I can only ask you to:
- create a new Windows user profile and login to it;
- run Firefox to create a new Firefox profile and close the browser;
- run FDM and configure monitoring options;
- run Firefox again and repeat all actions that ended with error message in the old user profile.
If the error occurs again, describe your actions step-by-step in your report, please.

Fx 41 and 42 beta, FDM 3.9.6 build 1614, XPSP3
When I download from YouTube, the file name is prefaced by the bracketed file type and resolution.
Is this a FDM thing or a YouTube thing? Is there a way to produce just the File name by itself?
Thanks

FDM works that way starting from 3.9.5 version. See screenshots, explanations, missing features, bug reports, etc. in "FDM 3.9.5" topic starting from here:oroville wrote:When I download from YouTube, the file name is prefaced by the bracketed file type and resolution.

There is no possibility to change filename for any video download so far, though this feature has been already suggested more than once.oroville wrote:Is this a FDM thing or a YouTube thing? Is there a way to produce just the File name by itself?

Fx 41.0.1, 42b3, 3.9.6 build 1614, xpsp3
Ive noticed that on numerous occasions I have had to reinstate the "Show downloads info while in progress" setting.
I launch a download, notice there is no evidence of it in progress, got to settings, and find the box is unchecked.
thx

Re: PLEASE put up all FDM and Firefox problems here!
Close all your browsers, finish all downloads and set this option once again. Restart FDM and make sure that it is still set. If it's not, that there is something wrong with your Windows user profile - maybe the registry file is broken, maybe some antimalware software is too obtrusive and blocks FDM access to the registry.oroville wrote:Ive noticed that on numerous occasions I have had to reinstate the "Show downloads info while in progress" setting.
