Thank you for the advice. You're absolutely right, CEF3 proves much better performance, so we're already working with it. The next FDM5 release will be based on CEF3.
Note that FDM 5.1 uses outdated CEF3 build 3.2171.1979.0 and outdated OpenSSL build 1.0.2d. Note also, that FDM 3.x doesn't use OpenSSL, so FDM 5.1 is the only FDM version that may work properly with HTTPS sites that require newest TLS versions (1.1, 1.2).

So it looks like clear declaration that:
1. We, developers, are not planning, we are just removing.
2. We, developers, are talking about safety and security, but we are using outdated (unsecure and buggy) libraries.
3. The demand to make things right (XP-compatible, secure and updated) is obvious, not just popular, but we, developers, haven't released yet (and don't want to release) any FDM 3.x or 5.x build fixed to work properly in Windows XP.

Did I understand your actions correctly, dear developers?

Not exactly.

Sure, there were a couple of OpenSSL updates since December. But you ask about this, not asking about the fact that we ignore all SSL certificate errors! Which is really insecure, fixed in FDM 3.9.6, gonna be fixed in 5.1.x later. Of course, such 2-months delay for security updates will become unacceptable as soon as we make the stable release (but we think it's acceptable during the active beta development).

The same answer applies to libtorrent, CEF and other 3rd party libs. BTW, as for CEF: their current branch 2623 is based on Chromium 49. Starting with Chromium 50 (i.e. very soon) they are dropping XP support. Ultimately, it's a buggy OS. The only way to prevent malicious attacks is not to use Windows XP, Microsoft statement says.

Version 5.1.3 released.
- Prioritize downloads (via context menu)
- Snail mode: download at a low speed (2.5 KBytes/sec per connection) without closing any connections
- Significantly improved interaction between core and UI, which should result in lower CPU and memory consumption
- Tutorial about monitoring settings: show it when the first download is caught from browser
- Splash screen and many other minor UI fixes like simplified errors displaying
- Fixed very slow moving to external drive
- Ability to rename a download when adding
- Ability to skip files with certain extensions

On Internet Explorer on Youtube, "Download with FDM" is missing in the context menu.

No probs on latest Google Chrome.

Please consider to implement options for the number of connections for a single download.
Currently, the limit seems to be 10. With IDM, I can download with 32 connections per download, which is not overkill with very fast internet and slow download server.

Sure, we'll add per-download settings and Safari context menu (as well as more items in other browsers context menu) in future releases.

aufkrawall wrote:32 connections per download, which is not overkill with very fast internet and slow download server.

But it's overkill for a slow server! If the bottleneck is the server itself (not your connection), it's not a good idea to use download managers this way. Other users might not even download from it.

The server can forbid multiple connections or limit the number of connections if it wants to, I don't see why it would be illegitimate to make use of the maximum potential.
And it doesn't have to be the server which is slow, it can also be the connection. e.g. when you download some bios or driver files from a taiwanese server and you are located in europe.

With v5.1.3.2938, the option to 'remove from list' is actually deleting the downloaded file.

I have set the default to 'remove from list' and the file is deleted.
I tried the option for the program to always ask and when I was asked I clicked 'remove from list' and the file was still deleted.

(The delete option works as expected).
