where is my download?
where is my download?
I set up FDM to download to a folder on my desktop. I downloaded a 9GB file from a usernet site. Upon completion, I could not find the file. it was not in the desk top folder, nor the default download folder. I am using XP SP3. i opened the file, a movie, from FDM, and it played no proble. I did a search for the file and it showed it as being in the desktop folder, but it is not.
Any thoughts?
An aside: does anyone know how to integrate FDM into Firefox so I can simply right click a download and select "download with FDM"?
Thanks

I think i may know. For a while I was having an issue with Windows 7 X64 (what I use anyway) and my downloads were becoming hidden. Now, without the use of FDM, this does not happen and I have tried it for nearly 3 weeks without FDM and have not had the issue any longer.
To solve this...
1. Go to Control Panel
2. Click on Folder Options
3. Click on View Tab
4. Click Show Hidden Files and Folders, and Drives
Click OK and it should be there on the desktop. I was going to report this but been a bit busy lately. I went through some time trying to find what happened to my downloads as they would disappear randomly and only the ones downloaded with FDM so hopefully this will help you until the issue gets resolved.

I've done all of the above, and I still CAN'T find my downloads. Any other ideas?
Re: where is my download?
1. Open FDM main window.Gabe wrote:I've done all of the above, and I still CAN'T find my downloads. Any other ideas?
2. Find your download in "All downloads" list.
3. Right click the download name and choose "Download properties" from context menu.
4. In the center of the dialog window you can see "Download currently saved to the file:" and the path to your download below.
5. Mark the path with a mouse and copy it to the clipboard.
6. Press Win+R (or select "Run..." from the Start Menu), paste the path and hit Enter.
If you can't find the download in "All downloads" list:
1. Go to "History" list and find the download. You can sort the list by file name or by url, you can also use custom selection by date the download has been added.
2. Right click the download name and select "Open folder" fron context menu.
3. If you want to see full path in the list, right click any column title and make sure "Saved to" column is marked as visible - it is the column before last. Then scroll to the right and resize the column if needed.

Re: where is my download?
After using FDM, the same is happening again, only this time I do believe I have your same issue, the files cannot be found.
First thing I tried of course was Usher's suggestion, second was hidden files, unfortunately x-amount of downloads, random times, seem to not exist, only in the download list. Even re-downloading them doesn't help, plus won't launch.
I will look into why and maybe help us both if I find something. If you could state which download\s you are attempting, that may help, I am wondering if it has to do with specific connections, files, etc...

You should change your antivirus, I suppose.

Re: where is my download?
Well, I have to disagree about the Anti-Virus change in this case (my situation). I've been using the same one for a long time, Avira, and it's set to alert me, not delete or quarantine without my say so, even if it did, it would notify me so not sure where that would put a damper on FDM downloads. Plus to be on the safe side (so to speak), I did shut it off as well as all securities, just to be sure.
Unfortunately, there is no rhyme or reason (in my case) and no events to show why this is happening. I download from trusted sources, Snapfiles, Cnet, etc... and I don't torrent.
I am not trying to hijack this thread, since I didn't start it (my apologies) but it sounds too familiar to my issue and hope to find a reason this is happening. I will monitor the registry, etc... hopefully pinpoint what is going on at least.

Re: where is my download?
Then you should check filesystem on a download partition and test your HDD reliability.
And you should trust no one. Some updates may change or reset software configuration (like Opera updates reset oGet settings), some AV updates may contain broken signature database, some admin or programmer tools are recognized as dangerous by most AV software, some "trusted" software sites hosted adware and spyware, some well-known computer magazines distributed CDs/DVDs infected with viruses, some factory formatted pendrives and floppy disks were also infected with viruses, etc. etc.

I am grateful for the help but to let you know, I've been working with and fixing computers for over 14 years so yes, what you say is true but for one, I test most of my software in my VM before using it, two, I have a backup image of my system if I ever feel it's compromised and reinstall. I do research any software I get before installing.
Now, HDD reliability. Well, this began with my Hitache sata TB drive, (which I changed as pure backup due to speed) I just purchased a new WD sata 600 Gb drive as my main now, and this is still occuring. As stated, prior to this, I left FDM off the system, all was fine, everything is still fine, no issues or errors with anything, then upon using FDM, this happened again.
I have no doubt it's FDM or some sort of conflict perhaps. Either way, I'm not letting go of FDM, maybe the new release will fix this issue.
Re: where is my download?
I believe I found it.
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
FDM has a setting under settings, new download, advanced, Miscellaneous to use the Use Hidden File Attribute on Uncompleted Downloads. Even when the download was completed, it is hiding the download as per the image above. Ccleaner from Filehippo, remained hidden when downloaded no matter what I did.
Perhaps there is a slight connection break, or some other hiccup in the download or simply an FDM bug. I would go with the hidden bug for one reason, the download works fine. The difference, when I unchecked this, yes, it stopped doing so for uncompleted downloads, but also, quit doing this for completed downloads.

Re: where is my download?
You've been working 14 years as PC support or IT staff and you haven't set Folder Options to show all file extensions and all files (including hidden and system)? Unbelievable.
When are you going to follow your own advice?

I see you are a pompous ass.
Aside from your ill stated comment and brainless reply, you are wrong on so many accounts.
1. I was simply showing that FDM was setting some downloads as hidden when it shouldn't, that was the screenshot, which I thought was obvious, for some. It was setting ccleaner, a download that DID finish, to HIDDEN.
2. I enabled hidden files a long time ago, which is what I even told the poster above to do. Do you read? I guess not.
It seems when people have issues here with FDM, you are an obvious attack cheerleader instead of actually trying to help. Please, don't hit me with your pom poms good sir, I didn't mean it. Pfffftt.
FDM's hidden non completed files should not be hiding completed, uninterrupted files.
So let's go back to what you stated the problem is..
Let's do a hard drive check, hmmmm, let's change the hard drive, yeah... Let's get rid of our anti-virus and get another, sure that could be it. Oh no, wait, it's all these viruses from Snapfiles and Cnet and software disks I don't have, attacking my VM and infecting the world. But hey, at least it's not FDM right?? Couldn't be that. Pfffftt yet again.
I supported FDM, tried to help others here, find issues, and overall put the word out on FDM but the hell with it, I'll find a new download manager, one that if there's an issue, people don't go out of their way to attack you or tell you to change your system.
Good bye FDM, no good word from me any longer..

Thank you, at least someone is willing to listen.
On that note, I wanted to let you know then, since that post, I did uninstall FDM and moved all my downloads to another partition, re-downloaded everything again with just the browser, none became hidden and none have since.
I am willing to reinstall FDM since you took the time to actually look into this, much appreciated.
Thanks again.
