Overwrite Downloaded File With Newer One of the Same Name?

Postby soundesigner » Sat Jun 11, 2011 10:51 pm

Forgive me if there exists an obvious answer for this, but I have been known to look for my glasses while wearing them, lose my keys while holding them, etc. I searched around through the forum and found another (yet unanswered) query similar to mine.

My radio station automation software will play a specifically named audio file at a specific time. If for example, I want to play a newscast, radio feature, or a particular podcast at 1200, all I have to do is have a properly named file in the folder the automation points to.

Now, suppose a program provider posts a downloadable audio file to their website, accessible with a generic name...say, "www,zippynews,net/sports.mp3", and that file is updated several times a day, or even hourly, but the filename/address never changes.

And now, to my question (finally): Does FDM have a provision for automatically overwriting a previously downloaded file of the exact same name, or will I end up with a folder full of similar files save perhaps an appended number? Since the automation software is looking for a specific filename, it would be peachy to have a single, properly-named file in the target folder.

Thoughts, insights and recipes deliriously appreciated!

Well, I believe what you mean is, you don't want a folder full of the same named files.

You can do this a couple of ways...

1.you can rename the file after it's downloaded

2. When the download window comes up, uncheck the box that says Generate a Filename Automatically. If you do this, you can rename the file in the little box as you go.

Of course, even if you do download the same file, at least in my experience, you get say...

FDM.exe

FDM.exe(1)

So there is no overwriting the download, at least not for me. I would download something small like Ccleaner, test the downloads, see how they work for you.
