Restart Download reverts file name to same as file on server

Postby FotS » Fri Mar 28, 2014 4:01 pm

Specifically:

Downloaded a bunch of drivers off from HP's website. They came down corrupted.
Deleted the corrupt files, then went into FDM and hit "Restart Download" one at a time on them.
Saved file name from Download Properties reverted from the custom name I applied back to it's default of what they're called on HP's site.

EDIT: Sorry, forgot to mention, FDM v3.9.3 build 1360
Firefox 27.0.1
Win 7 SP1 64 bit

What is the link for the download on HP? That will help if others can produce the same problem your describing to know what is going on.

Apologies for the delay...

Pick one. There isn't any specific one.

I think restarting download in FDM always worked automatically so it never used filenames changed manually. You can try to use comments added to a filename instead.

BTW. In general options available in "Add download" window for regular downloads are NOT fully implemented for other types of downloads so it's not a bug, it's just lack of features. You can click "Suggest an idea" button if you want to request some features.

If you download and use v3.8 from the main site's download section, it will retain the custom file name when you restart it.

I'm afraid I do not understand this comment?

I can do some tests to find the last good version.

Different download types have got different options defined in FDM. Some more or less general options are available for all download types, some options are valid for one download type only (f.e. torrents). Some options are available for one download type and missing for another type, though they could be useful for all download types:
- For regular downloads you can click Ctrl+N to add a new download. In this case you can see standard "Add download" dialog window, which provides many options to use by advanced users.
- In "Create flash video download" dialog window you can't select download group, you can't provide login name and password, you can't change file name, etc. Is this a bug or missing feature?
- Try Site Explorer or HTML Spider - can you see there the same options as in the standard "Add download" dialog window?

Ok, well, these are "regular" downloads, not torrents or anything like that. In fact, I don't use FDM for anything other than regular downloading. 90% of everything I download are drivers for HP computers (I'm an IT tech and part of my job for the company I work for is setup and roll-out of new PCs) and I obtain these drivers by going to HP's support and driver download page (http://www8.hp.com/us/en/drivers.html) and search for the model PC I'm looking for. Once at the page for the appropriate OS, I start clicking the "Download" buttons for the ones I specifically need, changing the file name to something other than the nondescript spxxxx.exe in the FDM dialog prompt and away I go.

But that also brings up another issue... one I'm sure is more to do with HP's website and not FDM (but am not sure if it's just the manor that HP hosts their files that FDM might be able to find a work around for?)... but if I let FDM form too many connections at once to HP's website in downloading the drivers (doesn't matter if it's several connections for 1 file or 1 connection each across several files), almost all of them come down corrupted. I have to set FDM to download 1 connection per download and 1 download at a time to get 95% of my downloads without having to hit restart.
