Can I use FDM to download a file someone shared with me via dropbox? It doesn't seem to be possible

I have the same question I think - but as it relates to Office365 Onedrive file

Just open links in your browser, follow instructions on the web page (if needed) and let FDM catch downloads. Copy and paste won't work in most cases, they aren't links for direct download.

Just copy the URL to the file and change direct download to "DL=1".
