Chrome: new warnings for JS downloads on Mac

Postby D. Yessa » Wed Jun 01, 2016 11:40 am

Google Chrome on Mac OS X started to warn users about all .DMG downloads initiated from JavaScript.
For example, if you try to download Firefox from the official site now, it will give you this warning:

We must notify you that you'll get the same warning if you follow these steps:

1. In FDM preferences:
- Chrome integration is turned on; extension is installed
- Allow the browser to download if you press Cancel option is turned on
- Catch links without confirmation option is turned off (since v5.1.13)

2. Let FDM catch any .DMG link from Chrome (for example, latest FDM 5.1)

3. In FDM, press Cancel. The DMG will go back to Chrome, it will show the warning. Note that Chrome doesn't show the warning if you download this file without FDM interception.

This is not a bug, we don't spoof any links, you can check it by yourself, as our Chrome extension is not obfuscated. It's just a very strange Chrome behavior with all JavaScript downloads. After pressing Cancel in FDM, download in Chrome is also started by JS code (our extension's JS code), so it's also attempted to be blocked. We haven't noticed such behaviour on Windows at the moment. There are no explanations from Google yet, we hope to see them soon. Other users are also surprised.
